Frequently Asked Questions
Why has my access been blocked?
Your internet address was blocked due to a large number of requests that appeared to come from automated systems ('bots') originating at your address.
What's wrong with bots?
There's nothing wrong with bots in principle. In fact they are sometimes the only way to get information as data. However, we provide a dedicated service for people who want to reuse our data, via a powerful API that is free for open data users (and {link_to("prices start from £99/year", new_api_account_path)}). Mechanically visiting every page in the website degrades the performance for other users. Some bots operate in groups of 1000, requesting many thousands of pages per minute.
But I'm not a bot, I'm a human
It's often difficult to tell the difference between a bot and a real person, and sometimes there are 'false positives' (we use algorithms for detecting them and automatically blocking IP requests). If you've seen this message, and no-one in your organisation is using bots, it's possibly because several people in your organisation are making a large number of similar requests, perhaps all routed through a single or limited number of IP addresses.
How do I get my IP address unblocked?
First, use the form on the left to let us know your IP address, and how you typically use the website. We'll compare this with the logs associated with the requests. However, it's possible that even if we unblock the IP address, it may be blocked by further automatic checks. Therefore, if your business depends on OpenCorporates, we recommend signing up to our Whitelisting package to ensure that your IP address does not get unblocked, or even better, about accessing our millions of records as structured data, either via our powerful API or as bulk data.
